[...] I know a lot of adults that are doing what they can to teach kids about investing and saving money. The most common way is the good old fashioned piggy bank. There is something to be said especially with younger children to putting some change in a piggy bank. It is a good start but it is also quite limited. With the good old pig you always can open him up and raid the savings and the savings lack any type of leverage. You earn no interest and little Johnny’s or little Dorothy’s pennies end up worth less ever day, unless they are solid copper that is.
Debby thanks for your kind words and your questions. I hope anyone that has any will ask. Here are my answers

Yes I think getting a roll or three of pennies is not a bad idea. Personally I would not bother right at the first of the year as often you will get the new shipments of the new years pennies. Perhaps if you want to keep some virtually uncirculated pennies for collector value you may grab some about the first month of the year.

What I think makes sense is about from March to the end of the year to do this. You can open the rolls and dump out the pennies. Pick your pre 82s and put the rest back into the rolls, and then just drop them back at the bank.

On saving the newer pennies, you can but I don't see much value any time very soon. It does not hurt and I am for saving any and all forms of money. If you do it the smart thing to do is sort them at least by decade or better half decade. Such as 82-85, 86-90, 91-95 etc. If you ever want to sell them to collectors this will be valuable.

Still I think it is the copper penny that makes the most sense to hole away right now. Consider what a hundred thousand may be worth in the hands of a great grandson or daughter some day.

For all we know in 30 years copper may be worth 12 dollars or even more a pound. Again this is just a fun easy project. I will admit it though I get 4 rolls of pennies a moth just to pick through.

Wow this is a really great article! I am going to start doing this and having my kiddos do it as well. Can I ask a few questions?

1. Do you think it makes any sense to actually get say a roll of pennies at the bank from time to time and sort through them.

2. Do you think newer pennies will ever be also worth money due to the zinc?

Thanks for all the great advice,
