Learn How to Write a Busiess Plan

February 12th, 2008

Writing a business plan can be a daunting task the first time you do it. So many would be great entrepreneurs have a great idea and need funding for it, some even self fund or boot strap their business and they all have big plans. They will tell you how big their company will be some day or why you should invest your money but most do not have a formal business plan.

Just this last week I was presented with a new idea that I really thought was excellent and the entrepreneur was clearly working hard and committed to getting the product to market. She was excited, smart and full of enthusiasm and of course wanted me to invest in her idea.

Now here is the reality the venture could be huge or a huge flop and that risk is always present so the risk is not why I turned her down. Nope it was the lack of a business plan that did it. She even had great packaging and was lined up to do trade shows and meet some perspective buyers from major retail chains. The risk is still there so I must make a risk assessment as an investor.

How I make a risk assessment

This is pretty simple I know the results if the product totally flops that is a 100% loss right? Yet what a business plan will tell me is what I can expect to see in gross sales and return of investment at various levels of success. How can an entrepreneur expect investment if they can’t even tell me the return I will get and in how long if things go right, mostly right or moderately successful. I need the numbers for all those out comes to weigh the risk reward, without that I can’t even get started.

I also may not understand the market, the supply chain, the competition and the total market cap and opportunity in a new niche.   I need it spelled out and I need to understand the marketing that the company will use to communicate its message to the world. Additionally if I am to put my money or even just partner with assistance/consulting with a company need to know their vision.  More importantly I need to know they understand their own vision. All of these things are addressed with a proper business plan. Even if you don’t want investors you need a business plan to be sure you have your own vision right, your own risk/reward ratio strait and to help you make the right decisions.

How do you do it? Easy turn to one of my heroes in business, Donald Trump for some free assistance. Trump University offers a free How to Write a Business Plan course you can sign up for and lean a ton from. I also recommend the excellent free business templates available from Score. They have templates for business plans, financial work sheets and other needs.

Why cutting interest rates is bad for the economy

January 23rd, 2008

Today I installed the contact form plugin for the WordPress blog platform. This is a great plugin that I recommend for anyone using WordPress; any way in just a few moments after adding my contact page, I got my first question. Here it is along with my answer,

“CostCutter, I have seen you do two posts recently stating how great low interest rates are and how anyone looking to refinance or buy is really lucky that rates are so low. I have also seen a lot of people on the T.V. saying that these rate cuts are actually bad. So which is it and why do these guys say low rates are so bad and you say they are so good.”

That is a great question but it assumes that I disagree with the folks saying these rate cuts are bad, actually I agree with them. My posts about low interest rates from today and the coming interest rate cut yesterday do seem to be positive on the rate cuts and they are but only on one dimension. What I am saying is if you need to refinance are are looking to buy a home then the low rates are very good for you as an individual. Therefore you should take advantage of them.

On the other side I actually think that long term these artificial rate cuts are just bad news for the economy. The reality is we have real problems in this nation that sooner or later have to come out. Things like rate cuts and tax cuts with no corresponding spending cuts only delay the eventual recession and every time we delay it we are just making the eventual market correction worse. No one in the government believes they can stop the recession, they just want to soften the landing but my belief and the belief of most economists is they are actually going to make it a much harder landing.

What you have to understand is why cutting interest rates “works” in the first place. The US economy is driven by spending, when spending slows then everything goes down. There are less jobs, less money in the system, less everything. When interest rates are low spending increases because it costs less money to borrow money so you can buy a bigger house, a bigger car, get a better rate on your credit card etc. These cuts cuts in “the prime rate” or how much the government charges your bank to borrow money. The bank of course is not in business for fun they add to the rate and loan money to you so lower prime rate equals lower rates for everyone and in theory more spending.

The problem is this theory only works long term if people are responsible with debt and it won’t help people who are already in the hole. If you are four payments behind on your home you can’t get a refinance loan no matter how low rates go. If you are paying 29% on your credit card your credit sucks and no one is going to give you a low interest one. Our country is in trouble because to many people spent money they can’t pay back and our government has done the same. When we artificially cut rates we simply put more people into more debt. In other words the country goes deeper into the hole and when at some point we are required to crawl out it will be more not less painful.

If this explanation seems oversimplified it isn’t.   In fact I will make it more simple. If your family is in debt and about to go broke and you take your debt of say 200,000 dollars and refinance it to a lower interest rate to reduce your payments it makes the situation better at first. If however, you then grow your debt back to the original payments you could not make then you are in more not less trouble. When our government puts out these low rates and increases personal and business debt in an economy where people are already in the hole it is the same exact thing.

In short I am glad for the responsible consumer that rates are low, I certainly did not want rates risen to higher levels but the reason behind this cut is nothing but a delay that is going to make what is bad already, worse.

Tax rebate checks may be on the way

January 18th, 2008

In an effort to stimulate the economy the congress and the president are working to provide an economic stimulus package. One big part will be sending most tax payers some of their tax money back, to the tune of from 300-800 dollars per taxpayer may be even as high as 1600 per household. You can read an article by newsday.com to get more specifics about it.

In any event I have mixed emotions about this. As a Libertarian I believe that all income tax is theft in the first place and I really can’t argue with the government giving back money they should have never taken in the first place. However, in this instance while not totally opposed (I just can’t oppose less tax no matter how it comes) I have sever very big concerns/issues with this plan.

  • Right now everyone is worried about the 2008 election. So even Mr. and Mrs. raise taxes (Barak and Hillary) are behind this massive retroactive tax rebate. Make no mistake this is buying votes by both sides of the isle.
  • True conservatives are always saying lower taxes are good for the economy and liberals always say that is wrong. Yet now that we are in deep shit everyone agrees cutting taxes makes the economy better? All this means is they all know all the time that low taxes are good and simply keep up the graduated income tax as a way to distract us all with “class warfare”.
  • In most instances I don’t see cutting taxes as “spending” yet in this case it is pure reckless spending. Why? How? Simple, no one in congress is talking about cutting any expenditures to fund this rebate. In other words they are still going to spend all the money they were going to spend and GET THIS our country is OUT OF MONEY. So where will we get the billions to fund this rebate? Well the fed will fire up the presses and just print more money at least symbolically. Honestly though our government will borrow it from foreign governments and increase out debt. In other words you kids get to pay back you debt on your 800 bucks with interest and will have to do so with a dollar that is weaker in the world market every day.
  • This package is a very short term fix. The whole theory is most people will “blow” their money and dump it in the economy and that will beef up spending for a bit and put more money into the economy and the rising tide will then float all boats. The theory is sound most people will blow it (instead of saving or paying on debt) and it will make it “better” but our “boat” has big holes in it. Make sense? This move won’t reduce US debt, reduce toxic consumer debt, fix the housing market or reduce our massive spending deficit.

So how could this plan actually work? You only have to change the spending equation on the side of the government to make it work very well. Check this way out,

  1. Require the government to give back at least the money they plan to right now.
  2. Require that they also cut 2 dollars in spending for every dollar returned to tax payers

That’s it! That would “stimulate the economy”! Our nation is not in trouble because our people spend to little, it is in trouble because the government takes too much of our money and then spends far more then even what they steal from us. Fix that problem, yes cut taxes but cut spending by 2 dollars for every dollar you refund to us.

Native Americans are responsible for the US Constitution

January 16th, 2008

Well not completely but on some levels it appears to be so. Let’s take a trip back to grade school and remember what we were taught about Native Americans or “American Indians” (though some consider that term politically incorrect). The short answer was that the Americas were sparsely populated with many tribes and they where not a very advanced civilization. This is just yet another example of our school system teaching dogma rather then facts, and you would think liberals would be all over this one?

The reality is when Europeans first came to the Americas they were heavily populated and very advanced in many ways. Recent archaeological evidence is that both continents were heavily settled and the Indians, in both North and South America, had, for millennia, shaped the land to fit their needs and desires. This includes even the rain forest that lies in Amazonia. It was the diseases that the first visitors that decimated the populations and left them in the sparse state that we pushed onto reservations a few centuries later.

Despite this they may have had more to do with our Constitution then the Magna Carta or Greek Influence and by a large margin. Apparently people known as the Haudenosaunee (ho-dee-no-SHO-nee) or Iroquois as we leaned to call them in school and were made up of six tribes that inhabitated the area in and around today’s upstate New York had a “Great Law of Peace” that specified among other things,

  • A council would rule the tribes and their business between each other but power was granted to the council and could be with drawn and the council only made decisions on external matters like peace treaties
  • The council had no power over the inner functions of tribes
  • The council could not declare war with out a referendum from the people
  • Every man was considered free and would never subject himself to the will of any other man

Does this sound familiar? It should and in fact one of the biggest issues that Europeans had with American Indians is that they had no respect for any “class structure”, they believed no man was better then any other man simply due to a birth right, possessed wealth or title. For this they were both feared and despised. Much of the revolutionary idealism that spawned the American Revolution came directly from colonists interaction with Native Americans.

This is yet another sacrifice that went into creating what was once the most free nation on the planet. Today many of the constitutional freedoms our founders died and risked all for are either gone or may soon be.

To learn more about these true roots of America’s freedom I recommend the book - 1491, - New Revelations of the Americas before Columbus - by Charles C. Mann.

Cut your health insurance costs

January 12th, 2008

I was asked to take a look at a new health insurance website called, Peoples Health Insurance and I have to say I was impressed with their offering. These guys are not a broker but an actual agency that can help you find the best rates and the best plan for your needs. I took a look specificly at health insurance Florida programs because I know by and large Florida is a high market for all insurance needs.

Health insurance costs are something I suggest you take a look at every year whether you are a self insured individual or a business owner, either way health insurance costs tend to be one of your biggest single expenses.  So now is the time early in 2008 take a moment and evaluate your current insurance program and its’ costs.  Take a look at the service they provide and what they cover and don’t cover.  You know my view if you can get the same or better for less money then do it.

What are you doing now that 2008 is here?

January 8th, 2008

Don’t worry this isn’t one of my “get your financial butt in line” posts, well mostly not. I am just wondering what everyone is up to in general, like what you are watching on TV, etc. Personally I have been enjoying Celebrity Apprentice quite a bit. Check out this video showing what a snake that Omarosa is. Got to be one of the biggest sleezes known to man in my book. To me this is why so many people are looking to build a business of their own, to buy a business or just to find some way to be independently employed. I mean who really wants to deal with a corporate environment that has far more then its’ fare share of Omarosas.

I have also started out on a diet. Last year I elected to not go Elk hunting because honestly I was afraid I might die somewhere alone on the mountain. The last time I went I had a great but tough time. I came home with blistered and even bloody feet and was sore for a week. Back then old CostCutter was in much better shape. This year going out into the unforgiving wilderness alone seemed like a big risk. Since I am way to young to give up that type of life I am getting back in shape. Who knows, perhaps when I loose my weight I will come clean and say who I am.

Additionally I am breathing some new life into a few of my businesses with some creative ideas and looking to hire a few new creative and talented people. The search for talent is really tough right now, I just listened to this podcast on the shortage of talent in the market today and I have to really agree with the guest speaker. While real estate investing today seems to be a buyers market there is no question that in the talented and skilled employee market it is a sellers market. If you are good, have a proven track record and can deliver then today you call the shots. If you are in the market for a new position and are not finding a lot of opportunities I recommend you get in touch with a good executive recruiting firm.

On another note all together I really think the 2008 presidential race is off to an interesting spin. Ron Paul still seems to be shunned by the media despite basicly finishing in a three way tie with 10% of the vote while Rudy was at only 4%. Typical!

Today we focus on New Hampshire, I predict the following for the republicans.

1. Rudy does aweful and everyone says it doesn’t matter.

2. John McCain wins and his national numbers rock because people are lemmings.

3. Mitt Romney does OK and comes in second and they say it is over for him.

4. Ron Paul does far better then the 8% the polls say he can expect. Comes in third and gets ignored again.

Such is the stupidity of our media and the political process.

Moving on the the Democrats - Hillary has had a break down practically coming to tears because she was asked how her day was mostly because Barock Obama is now surging in New Hampshire and she is on track to loose again. Of course the news is making a huge deal of Barock’s massive support. His followers indeed love him, they laud his speeches and vision yet the news people can’t seem to find a single supporter that actually knows his position on any of the big issues. America, please wake up, support who you want but for the love of God know why you support them.

My personal view I think Hillary is a disaster for this country as our President, her health care plan, tax hikes and some other policies will only serve to make worse a recession that is flat out coming to hit us hard over the next few years.   That said Barock is worse, he want to tax more, spend more and make government even bigger and more intrusive then Hillary.  However he can speak very well, avoids the issues and is very likable.  This is why Hillary is in trouble, even her supporters realize Barock is going to be harder for any Republican to beat and are picking the best candidate to win in November.

I personally think Hillary is unelectable and if she looses the primary (which I predict) Barock is probably a 2 to 1 favorite just in odds to win the presidency.  In other words a Hillary loss in the primaries is bad for the republicans while her victory would be very good indeed for them.

My predictions for the Democrats in New Hampshire are as follows.

1. Barock wins by at least 10% of the vote and we hear all the liberal papers cheer how it is finally time, “for an African American president”. When the country has been “ready” for a long time and we are all really tired of being called racists in subversive ways by the communists running our press.

2. Hillary gets slammed, perhaps even damn near ties with Edwards. This is spun as the “end of Hillary by the right” and some how a “right wing conspiracy” or “anti women” thing by the left. The left leaning media will hold out all hope for Hillary and talk about how New Hampshire and Iowa “don’t really matter”. Of course they really don’t it is just that the media just spent the last 30 days convincing us how much they do indeed matter.

3. Edwards does ok in 3rd but the media talks about how that is “hope for his campaign” even though there are only four Democrats in the race. Idiots.

4. Bill Richards gets a clue and drops out.

So what are you up to in 2008? What do you think of our coming elections?

Why you should be making money online

December 1st, 2007

In the future I will discuss many specific ways that you can make money online. Remember key to our philosophy here at cut that bill is not just reducing expenses but keeping more of your money, investing it wisely and most importantly increasing your cash flow in to your household or business. There is quite simply no easier or more passive way to earn some additional money today then to do it online.

Let me be clear though, “how to do it”, is irrelevant until you get your head around the why and until you grasp how a very “small success” can drastically change your future. Let’s take three very doable numbers and consider how they could impact your life to really grasp how powerful an additional income stream from the internet can be. These figures are

  • $100
  • $250
  • $500

Now trust me making these types of additional monthly income figures is very doable for just about anyone with a willingness to do some investing, learning and work. You will have to work harder in the beginning but such is life. Again though for now let’s stick to why you should and what it can mean. What do each of these figures mean to you,

An extra $100 dollars a month can smash 1200 dollars of out standing additional debt a year which is a good start. Paying off 1200 dollars in additional credit card or other high interest debt actually saves about 5000 dollars of long term interest if it is applied on top of your existing payments. Add 100 dollars to a typical house payment on say a 120,000 dollar mortgage and it can shave GET THIS almost 5 years off a 30 year loan. Invested at 10% and just put away it will add a quarter million to your retirement in 30 years, do it for 40 years and it is now worth about 600K added to your golden years. Remember that is only 100 dollars a month more!

An extra $250 is a lot more powerful as you might imagine, with investing you don’t just get 2.5 times the effect as compounding creates an exponential increase. Invested over 40 years of your working life that 250 dollars a month turns into over 1.5 million at simple 10% interest. Of course you can do much better then that with some creativity and participation in your financial planning. Turn to debt and you can pay down an addition 3000 dollars in debt annually which can save many in credit card debt over 20,000 dollars over the live of debt!

Step up to an additional $500 in income into your monthly cash flow and you can begin to really make a massive impact. Try 6000 dollars in additional debt destroyed per year. This alone would destroy the average of 20K in consumer debt most middle income Americans are living under in just over three years. Get out of that type of debt in three years or less and you can save massive amounts of interest. Investing gets interesting, 30 years of 500 a month at 12% interest equals GET THIS over 5 million dollars. There is even more power though!

500 a month would allow you to buy a modest second home if you wanted for vacations in some beautiful part of rural America. Don’t believe me? Fine I own a beautiful modest second home in an somewhat tourist area of the South up in the beautiful Ozarks. The place sits on 5 acres, is 15 minutes to town, 20 minutes to a beautiful lake and only about 10 people live all the dead end road the place is located on. Everyone owns at least 5 acres so the houses are very spaced apart. My total payment? With taxes and insurance 523 dollars a month. How I just looked hard enough.

Now the real beauty here is what I call my “Plan B”. Let’s say that my companies all go bust, I can’t find a job and my wifes income all of the sudden can’t cover our bills at our primary residence. Now this is not to say that everyone should invest extra income in a second/vacation home, it just begins to open your mind to the types of things you can do to build and preserve wealth with just a few hundred extra dollars of income a month.

What I Blow Money On

November 9th, 2007

starbucks coffeePart of the benefit of having extra money is the ability to spend some of it. I believe in cutting costs, investing wisely and building wealth and security. Yet I also believe in enjoying life along the way, if not then what is the point? Any of us could die tomorrow so the key is to balance living for today with planning for tomorrow. So what are some of the things I spend more money on then I should or some of the stuff I just buy when I am bored? Here are a few,

  • Starbucks Coffee - I will admit it, I am a caffeine fiend. When I made a lot less money Starbucks was a luxuary that I enjoyed once in a while, now I don’t go a day without a Vente Cappuccino or two. This is extravagance, a waste, a senseless spending that I end up with nothing to show for. Still it makes me happy and I have no real debt to worry about any more, I don’t stop investing to fund it and I only pay in cash so I have the money in my pocket each week to cover the expense.
  • My Animals - I have dogs, cats and a lot of reptiles. As a child I wanted to be a herpetologist (a biologist who studies reptiles) but the lure of business was too powerful and I never went to college to pursue the biology degree. When I didn’t have much money and was in debt heavily I kept no pets, today I have an abundance of animals around me. I do breed the reptiles and one day they may pay for themselves but for now all the animals are an expense that never returns any money. Yet the dogs and cats bring joy to me and the family and the reptiles allow me to fufil my childhood dream of being a researcher working with snakes.
  • Gadgets - I have all kinds of electronic do dads and I buy something new at least every month. Cameras, software, media players, etc. I just love technology, I like seeing what you can do with it, what you can create and what the latest craze is before it hits. Some of the stuff like my Blackberry has a real purpose for work and organization but most is just for fun. I didn’t need a Sony Alpha DSLR but I bought one because I wanted it. I always pay cash for these gadgets but I must admit I blow money on them. Most are never used to turn a profit I just enjoy having them.

Now let’s say I am bored and just want to go out bumping around with my wife to shops and what not. Doing so will almost always result in spending money! We are all human though and just sitting at home counting money can get old and you don’t always want to really plan an activity so “shopping” (our parents window shopped but we seem to have failed to inherit that ability) has become an American past time. Here are some things I have done to allow me the activity with out totally blowing it.

  • Silver Coins - I am a huge fan of American Eagle Coins and often during a jaunt out I stop by one of several local coin shops and buy one or three of them. I keep them in plastic tubes and have been doing this past time for about 10 years now. I occasionally buy more numismaticly valuable coins, mostly older silver dollar and silver half dollar coins. The Eagles have a fixed value against the silver market price (at least newer ones do) so they are decent investments. The other coins have a bit of “subjective value” based on both the silver and collector markets combined. Still even they have a basis based on the price of silver. I will never make a mint on this but there is a value to these coins that will grow. So I get to browse, spend money and not just throw it away.
  • Houses - I shop for houses all the time and the beauty of this is multiple. There are always countless new model homes to take a look at, walk around in etc. You never impulse buy a home so that is nice, I shop a lot and buy very seldom. The biggest value is I know my real estate market cold, I know exactly what different types of homes in different areas sell for. So I do know a deal when it pops up. This is the best rule I can give you if you want to invest in real estate some day, window shop houses for a year or so first. Record how long those “great deals” take to sell and keep your whits about you. In time you find gems and when you do you will know it.
  • Books - I love knowledge and I love to shop for books, both audio and print. To help with my addiction I shop mostly at Half Price Books so I pay less per book then buying new. A used book is no big handicap to reading it so I just can’t see paying full price unless I want a new book. Then here is the best part, some of these go into my home library but others I read, am done with and sell them back to half price books. They generally pay about 20% or what I bought them for.

So there you go some ways I admit to just blowing money and other ways I stave off boredom with shopping that doesn’t just reduce my net worth dollar per dollar.
