Raising Money for your School with Schoolpop

February 12th, 2008

I really love kids and even though I only choose to have one of my own I do what I can to help all kids especially when it comes to education. So when I was asked to look at a site called Schoolpop that offers simple elementary school fundraisers I was more then happy to do so. Now I have purchased things form kids that knock on my door or have parents bringing it to the office that range from candy to candles to popcorn and chocolate. They all have one thing in common, they are about 300% more expensive then buying the same thing from a store. Still we do it just to help out, right?

Schoolpop is totally different here is how it works strait from the Schoolpop website,

Simply register with Schoolpop and start shopping. You don’t need to purchase anything you wouldn’t normally buy. Just shop with hundreds of Schoolpop merchants online, in stores, or through catalogs, and you’ll automatically earn contributions for your favorite school or nonprofit.  All of our merchants are committed to helping your community by contributing a percentage of your purchases to the school or nonprofit of your choice.

The beauty is you just buy things you would buy anyway and a percentage goes to your school of choice. To make this successful PTAs and Student Groups will need to be sure to advise the students and parents of the options but it is clear a decent sized school could do very well if each parent made even two-three purchases a year. All that and we don’t need to send our kids door to door giving people an excuse to overspend and break their diets. These guys definitely make my list of recommended sites.

Cool new real estate investment forum and website

February 12th, 2008

As I have said many times on this blog one of the best ways to build wealth is with the proper use of real estate as part of your investing portfolio. The problem for most people is simply where do you start? I mean there are countless techniques like buying foreclosures, land lording, flipping properties, buying foreclosures and foreclosures or buying and managing multi tenant properties.

I have always also believed that in the day and age of the internet it is collective intelligence that helps people skip making countless mistakes in favor of learning from the mistakes and experience of others. Today by sharing information people are able to do more and learn more faster then ever before So, when I was asked to have a look at a new real estate website, Investors Lounge Online, and their brand new real estate investment forum I was happy to do so and let my readers know about it.

I found the site to be beautifully designed with excellent resources including a great articles section, advice on financing, great FAQs, advice on auctions and a ton more.  The site even offers some great real estate tools.   I think however, it is the forum with the most long term potential.  Right now it is brand new and it could really use some folks to join and get it started off with a bang.  The forum is feature rich and again the design is just excellent.  They even have translation functions into 10 languages, talk about bringing collective intelligence across the globe.  With outstanding information and resources and a forum that is sure to become an outstanding resource of its own Investors Lounge makes my list of recommended sites.

Using comments to build your email list

February 11th, 2008

I picked this up from a blog I read about making money online called, MindValley Labs.  The technique is pretty strait forward and should be really effective.  All you do is create a “thank you” message so that anyone that comments on your blog is then immediately asked to join your email list.  That is a nice passive add on form of email marketing isn’t it?
Now to me this is sort of the type of thing we should have all been doing a long time now.  I mean when you get a comment that person is engaged with you there is no better time to ask them to take action then while they are in action.

When I figure out how to do this in Word Press I will post instructions but it may be next week.  If you can figure this out and you blog about it I will post about your blog rather then just telling my readers how to do it.  If you come up with a way to modify Word Press just comment about it below and link to your post on it.  I will then do a full post linking to your post and telling my readers where they can learn how.

Otherwise it will be next week before I have time to get to it.

Use Infomercials to sell your products

February 7th, 2008

I am first and foremost a believer on marking online for any and all services and products today. I have marketed everything you can think of online from 20 Dollar informational DVDs to multi million dollar pieces of heavy construction equipment to legal service and even how to make money online products.

That said there is still a ton of power in using “old media” like television advertising so when I was asked to have look at a website that produces and promotes TV Commericals and Infomercials I was happy to do it. The company is called Hawthorn Direct aka, DRTV.

What I really like about Hawthorn Direct is the fact that they are very good at integrating your marketing efforts and tracking the exact results from each campaign.   Nothing is more important in marketing and advertising then knowing your exact ROI for every effort, so for that reason Hawthorn Direct makes my list of recommended sites for business owners.

Selling products of services online

January 30th, 2008

In my site philosophy I explain in commandments 4 and 5 that I think every person today should be to some degree “self employed” and have some business of their own. Today the easiest way to make that happen is to make your money with internet marketing and one of the best things you can sell are either software that is down-loadable or informational products that can also be downloaded. With that all you need to do is create the product and market it, there is no inventory, no shipping, no real expenses.

To do it right though one thing you will definitely need though is ecommerce software or what is commonly referred to as an online shopping cart.  I was recently asked to check out a site called AmeriCommerce which provides the tools to do this.  I found there software is very easy to integrate and quite robust at the starting price of only 39 Dollars a month and if you need help with integration or even some help with web design they can provide that as well.

I like this platform for a few reasons

  • Easy integrations with Google Check Out and PayPal
  • Very stable platform that is simple but also robust for power applications as well
  • It is search engine friendly
  • Offers a ton of features
  • Tracks your ROI (return of investment)
  • Allows you to set up affiliates programs
  • And a ton more

So check out AmeriCommerce if you need a good shopping cart program and the best news is they offer a 14 day free trial with every program so you can be sure of their quality of service before spending any money, for that they make my list of recommended sites.

A great way to connect children to their roots

January 28th, 2008

If you have read this blog for any length of time then you know I am big on teaching children to save, invest and understand money from an early age. What I have observed in talking with people from many generations is that there is a direct correlation between how a person views both money and debt and what generation they come from.

My Grandfather’s generation saw debt as a prison and felt that you should scrape and save every penny you could. My father was a lot like his grandfather and passed much of that wisdom to me but yet his generation was more open to some debt and some more free spending. In my generation people live in debt (I am a Gen X’r) and the Y generation is graduating college with enough debt to fund most first home mortgages. With each succeeding generation comes more spending, less savings and more debt.

I really feel it was my firm connection to immigrant grandparents that went through hell to get here, then dealt with the great depression and then served in World War 2 that cemented my firm conviction in the principles of saving, keeping debt low and always planning for a “rainy day” that I discuss on this blog.

One thing I think parents can do with children to ground them in these sound principles is to make sure they are connected to their roots. So when I was asked to look at a website where you could build a family tree for free I was happy to do it.   The site is called Tribal Pages and it is very cool and at a cost of free it is a great low cost activity for you to do with your kids and involve the rest of the family.

As you build out your tree you have you are able to do it on your own free web page, other family members can view it online and help you fill in missing spots. (Don’t worry if you are not technical it is a very easy system to use.) I firmly believe that a child that knows their past and how hard their ancestors worked to ensure they could have the opportunities we do today will be more likely to value money and opportunity. When I interview and hire people from Gen X and Gen Y, I see a ton of “entitlement attitude” and it really bothers me. Most people today seem very disconnected from the reality of just 50 years ago.

So if you want your kids to value what they have and in fact if you want to value it more yourself I encourage you to research your past, build a family tree and understand why we have so much opportunity today. Research the values of your family a generation or three ago and build that connection. Tribal Pages definitely makes my list of recommended sites for providing a great service at no cost that helps families understand and preserve their identities.

Cut your cost of heating with style

January 22nd, 2008

FireplaceOne of our chief goals here at CutThatBill is to help you find creative and cool ways to cut costs so when I was asked to look at a new website about heating and saving money on your costs I was happy to do it. The site is called DESA Online Outlet and they offer great prices on a variety of room heaters. A small room heater is often viewed as something that raises rather then lowers bills but that is not the case when used properly. Match the right heater with the right sized room and you can take the chill out of the room you are in most often and keep your overall thermostat setting lower.

Another cool option is using either ventless gas logs or vented gas logs into your fireplace. I prefer ventless because they provide far more efficient heating and still give you a lot of the feeling of a traditional wood fire. If you really want the look and feel of wood though vented logs will give you more of that. Either of them are more efficient and less costly then wood, (unless you cut your own). One more thing I really liked about DESA Online Outlet is they show you exactly how to cut your winter expenses by 15% rather then just claiming it to be the case.

So if you have a fire place that you don’t like dragging wood in for, would like to cut the cost of your heating or if you just have one room that is always to cold give these guys a visit and see if they have a deal on what you are looking for they certainly make my recommended sites list.
