Cut costs on international calling
Right now if you are paying very much for domestic long distance in the United States I just don’t think I can help you. There are so many cheap options for domestic calling you kind of have to be stubborn to pay more then a few cents a minute. Or perhaps like many you tossed out your home phone all together and just use your cell phone, many have and there are good reasons to do so.
Now for international calling I generally recommend VoIP service but for some it just doesn’t work and others just don’t call often enough to bother. Additionally if you have gone the cell phone only route and don’t have a cable modem it isn’t an option. So what is the solution?
Try using discount international phone cards for saving money on all your international calling. GetMeCallingCards.com is a great source to shop for many different calling cards for many different needs. For instance I often call Russia to talk to one of my outsource programmers, I found a card for Russian long distance that costs only 1.2 cents a minute, that is a huge savings over even my VoIP rate.
Use this site to shop around they have a great card search tool where you can put in your country you call from and to and get the best rates and more importantly the best terms. Each card they recommend you can view all the details, charges and fine print beyond just the surface rate. Many times the lowest rate is not the best price over all so be smart read and pick the one best for where, how and how often you call.
GetMeCallingCards.com breaks all that down to easy and clear English so it definitely makes my list of recommended sites.
Four things I would start doing online to make money as a newbie
It seems like forever ago when I first built my first website. In fact it was more then 10 years ago and at times it is easy to loose touch with how overwhelming it is for a brand new potential internet entrepreneur who wants to get started today. So I though I would share four ways a new person can begin to get started. None are all that hard but none can be complete with out learning more, these are just starting points.
1. Get a blog and do some blogging for dollars. I suggest you try not to be to obvious about this because Google has begun to give the smack down to bloggers that do this. I recommend you never use the name of the companies that you go through to find business on your blog as you are just asking for problems. What I can simply say is go to google and search for “get paid to blog” and you will find many options.
Now you are going to have to blog for about 90 days and do so at least 4 times a month to qualify for these types of services. Once you do however, you can and will make money. I won’t go deeper right now but will make some specific how to details available in the future. Let me just say that anyone that wants to can put an extra 500-1500 a month into their income column can just by doing this.
2. Learn the very basics of website design and publishing, even a tiny bit of say PHP programming can go a long way. Today if you can slap together a website you can make some money. Spend the money for a good design software and take a course on it at a community college or a CEU class at a university. Total investment may be about 1,000 dollars and it may make you a lot more then any degree will. You don’t have to be a great designer but at least be able to build simple sites, you can out source the actual “graphics” work.
Most sites are nothing but a header, a footer and some pictures. Outsource your graphics and build a site. Make your first site about something you just love to talk about and don’t worry if you make a dime on it. All you need at first is the “ability” to build and design sites. Learn how to do it and do not rely on site builders they are to limiting. Today if you can publish content there are countless ways to make money. Oh and you can pay your tuition with one months worth of blogging with suggestion number one above.
3. Start with affiliate marketing and take your skills from item two to build unique websites that provide information, build email lists and sell a few products around a niche. Later you may and honestly should create your own products and keep all your profits but in the beginning you are learning how to market and sell online so dedicate all your efforts to doing so.
A great source of items that others have made that you can sell for about a 50% commission can be found at Click Bank. Odd are there is a product about any subject you can think of. Most sell in the 50 dollar range and pay about 25 dollars in commission. You don’t have to make anything, deal with customers, etc. This is not a long term way to get rich but it is a great way to learn and earn at the same time.
4. Become an adSense Affiliate and a Yahoo Publisher, neither pay the big money they used to but they are both very passive ways to earn some extra money. In time with enough sites anyone can pull in a hundred dollars a month at least. Remember invest 100 dollars a month from age 18-65 in quality funds in a tax deferred or sheltered account and you are a multi millionaire.
The key with adSense and Publisher is make your ads blend into your sites. The inexpensive wine site I reviewed a few days ago does a good job at this. Use back ground colors that match, make the links the same color as links on your site and above all no borders for the ads. Then be sure to put the ads in prominent spots on your site, don’t hide them remember you want people to click on them.
So there you go 4 places to get started with making money online. Each has its on benifits and challenges yet if you commited to learning how to at least do all four in the next 6 months you are well on your way to truly building a solid and passive online income. In time you out source more and more and you don’t do all the work yourself. Yet in the beginning it is important to be sure you understand things, learn what you want and what you don’t want.
More then that learn to make some money asap and again bloggin for dollars is a 100% guaranteed way to start the income flow. From there you can branch out, learn more and keep building.
One more important thing. Don’t buy over priced crap, info courses and other bullshit. There are countless gurus out there, well countless self appointed internet marketing gurus that claim to have the secret to making money. They are mostly full of crap and even the ones with good info unless you learn the fundamentals first it won’t do you any good.
Start with free advice and perhaps use some of the online video courses that don’t cost to much. Learn basics, learn “how to” and then you can develop “what to” on your own terms. I promise you one of the surest ways to kill of your future in making money online is buying one to many 297 or 997 dollar how to courses.
Don’t buy that crap, start with a blog, learn to make sites, practice with affiliate products and sell ad space along the way with Google and Yahoo. Look for solid how to advice and instruction and limit your spending on “education” to 50 dollars or less a month (other then stuff like the college course I mentioned) and you will in time work things out. Gurus exist not to make you rich, they exist to enrich themselves with your dollars.

I was just asked to review a web site called Finance Genius. I have to tell you I like what I saw. Basically the site is an information portal that helps consumers with a combination of advice and what amounts to a brokerage approach in connecting consumer to different options for things like insurance, mortgages, student loans and Auto Warranty services. With automotive warranties in particular I always advise people to shop outside sources, the extended warranties offered by dealerships tend to be over priced and then simply lumped into your loan so you get to pay interest on it. My additional advice is wait until your included warranty is almost up before paying for an extended on. Why pay for a warranty you may not use?
Like any site that is recommending various financial products my advice is to shop what they have and compare it to other options. Always make sure you find the best deal you can but Financial Genius certainly looks like one of the good guys so if you are in the market for any of their services have a look around their site and see what they have to offer. Remember my view is debt is bad but when it is necessary get the best deal, with the best terms you can find. Sites like this one are good tools for finding those types of deals.
Filed under Personal & Home | Comment (0)Tax rebate checks may be on the way
In an effort to stimulate the economy the congress and the president are working to provide an economic stimulus package. One big part will be sending most tax payers some of their tax money back, to the tune of from 300-800 dollars per taxpayer may be even as high as 1600 per household. You can read an article by newsday.com to get more specifics about it.
In any event I have mixed emotions about this. As a Libertarian I believe that all income tax is theft in the first place and I really can’t argue with the government giving back money they should have never taken in the first place. However, in this instance while not totally opposed (I just can’t oppose less tax no matter how it comes) I have sever very big concerns/issues with this plan.
- Right now everyone is worried about the 2008 election. So even Mr. and Mrs. raise taxes (Barak and Hillary) are behind this massive retroactive tax rebate. Make no mistake this is buying votes by both sides of the isle.
- True conservatives are always saying lower taxes are good for the economy and liberals always say that is wrong. Yet now that we are in deep shit everyone agrees cutting taxes makes the economy better? All this means is they all know all the time that low taxes are good and simply keep up the graduated income tax as a way to distract us all with “class warfare”.
- In most instances I don’t see cutting taxes as “spending” yet in this case it is pure reckless spending. Why? How? Simple, no one in congress is talking about cutting any expenditures to fund this rebate. In other words they are still going to spend all the money they were going to spend and GET THIS our country is OUT OF MONEY. So where will we get the billions to fund this rebate? Well the fed will fire up the presses and just print more money at least symbolically. Honestly though our government will borrow it from foreign governments and increase out debt. In other words you kids get to pay back you debt on your 800 bucks with interest and will have to do so with a dollar that is weaker in the world market every day.
- This package is a very short term fix. The whole theory is most people will “blow” their money and dump it in the economy and that will beef up spending for a bit and put more money into the economy and the rising tide will then float all boats. The theory is sound most people will blow it (instead of saving or paying on debt) and it will make it “better” but our “boat” has big holes in it. Make sense? This move won’t reduce US debt, reduce toxic consumer debt, fix the housing market or reduce our massive spending deficit.
So how could this plan actually work? You only have to change the spending equation on the side of the government to make it work very well. Check this way out,
- Require the government to give back at least the money they plan to right now.
- Require that they also cut 2 dollars in spending for every dollar returned to tax payers
That’s it! That would “stimulate the economy”! Our nation is not in trouble because our people spend to little, it is in trouble because the government takes too much of our money and then spends far more then even what they steal from us. Fix that problem, yes cut taxes but cut spending by 2 dollars for every dollar you refund to us.
Filed under Business & Marketing | Comments (4)Native Americans are responsible for the US Constitution
Well not completely but on some levels it appears to be so. Let’s take a trip back to grade school and remember what we were taught about Native Americans or “American Indians” (though some consider that term politically incorrect). The short answer was that the Americas were sparsely populated with many tribes and they where not a very advanced civilization. This is just yet another example of our school system teaching dogma rather then facts, and you would think liberals would be all over this one?
The reality is when Europeans first came to the Americas they were heavily populated and very advanced in many ways. Recent archaeological evidence is that both continents were heavily settled and the Indians, in both North and South America, had, for millennia, shaped the land to fit their needs and desires. This includes even the rain forest that lies in Amazonia. It was the diseases that the first visitors that decimated the populations and left them in the sparse state that we pushed onto reservations a few centuries later.
Despite this they may have had more to do with our Constitution then the Magna Carta or Greek Influence and by a large margin. Apparently people known as the Haudenosaunee (ho-dee-no-SHO-nee) or Iroquois as we leaned to call them in school and were made up of six tribes that inhabitated the area in and around today’s upstate New York had a “Great Law of Peace” that specified among other things,
- A council would rule the tribes and their business between each other but power was granted to the council and could be with drawn and the council only made decisions on external matters like peace treaties
- The council had no power over the inner functions of tribes
- The council could not declare war with out a referendum from the people
- Every man was considered free and would never subject himself to the will of any other man
Does this sound familiar? It should and in fact one of the biggest issues that Europeans had with American Indians is that they had no respect for any “class structure”, they believed no man was better then any other man simply due to a birth right, possessed wealth or title. For this they were both feared and despised. Much of the revolutionary idealism that spawned the American Revolution came directly from colonists interaction with Native Americans.
This is yet another sacrifice that went into creating what was once the most free nation on the planet. Today many of the constitutional freedoms our founders died and risked all for are either gone or may soon be.
To learn more about these true roots of America’s freedom I recommend the book - 1491, - New Revelations of the Americas before Columbus - by Charles C. Mann.
Filed under Business & Marketing | Comment (0)What does the sub prime melt down mean and who gets the blame
Right now all we seem to hear about in any economic news is the subprime meltdown and how it is responsible for everything. Now the sub prime meltdown is bad but it is also misunderstood in both cause and effect. Let’s look briefly at both sides
The Cause - Everyone wants to blame the lenders for this. To me they get say 20-40% of the blame at most, sure they were stupid and sure it is biting them in the ass right now, as it should but they are not the real ones to blame. Our nation is so fixated on passing the buck and not actually blaming the person who is guilty our grandparents may not recognize our nation if they were with us today.
So who should get the blame for taking rapidly accelerating ARMs, hybrid mortgage loans and borrowing to the absolute limits of their budgets? Doesn’t really take a genius to figure it out does it? The people that took out mortgages that were too high or had bad terms are to blame. That is your fellow Americans and or you yourself if you took out these loans. It is so ever loving easy to blame corporate America but in the end if you borrow money and can’t or don’t repay it the blame is on you, not the company that loaned you the money.
The Effect - The news about the subprime market makes me think of El Niño. Remember El Niño the weather pattern back in the 90s that we blamed for everything. To me that is the sub prime meltdown today. A stock goes down, blame the sub prime lenders. A company lays off workers blame the sub prime market. To many illegal aliens are crushing our educational and health care systems, blame it on the subprime market. Our nation has over spent and is in a 58 trillion dollar hole just for social security alone, blame it on….OK you get the point.
The reality is the subprime bust is bad, very bad but it is also being used as an excuse for other problems in the market. Even the lenders are probably more effected by toxic unsecured (credit card) debt then bad sub prime loans. Yet make no mistake lending institutions are going to loose an estimated 300-400 billion or more before the whole thing comes to an end. Some banks will get bought by other banks, some will flat out shut down and all and all this is going to be another reason for the coming recession or more accurately depression.
Yet when it hits don’t let the talking heads on the idiot box tell you it all because of the greedy sub prime lenders First they are taking a bath you would not believe right now and getting what they deserve, lost money and some going under. Next the real reason for our recession is the US Government is spending far more money then we have and has been for 35 years, the bills are coming due.
So what can you do about all this?
First I advise you to read my post from yesterday about the overall weakness in the economy and watch the video with Comptroller General David Walker to get some specific understanding of what our real problems are and to learn some ways you can protect your assets.
Second I recommend you visit MorCap Fund Advisors, LLC and read their excellent article on the subprime meltdown to better understand it and its’ impact our our economy.
Filed under Business & Marketing | Comments (2)A different kind of real estate investment
As anyone who knows my true identity could attest to I dearly love to hunt and fish. For many non hunters it is hard to understand how much hunters truly love the animals we hunt. In fact an non hunter would be surprised how much sorrow really is felt in the heart of a hunter that sees a wounded animal or an animal that is killed with no purpose on a highway by a car or truck.
OK so what in the world does this have to do with real estate investing? It has a great deal to do with it. I want to discuss with you the concept of “investing in land for generations to come”. One of my biggest motivations for acquiring wealth is so I can purchase tracts of undeveloped land, improve the wild life habitat there and do all I can to make damn sure it stays undeveloped for as long as possible.
There is of course the potential to profit from this approach if you want to. Land that can be used by hunters and is not marred by human interaction is becoming more and more scarce. I want you to understand that you don’t need to buy hundred acre tracts to participate in this type of “investing” a 1-5 acre lot in the right place can be something you turn into a sportsman’s paradise. The goal would be to find land that either adjoins protected public land or perhaps land that is so rugged that developing it will be so costly as to protect it from development.
Such land is still available in many places all over the country. In fact the harder it is to build on the less it costs and the lower the cost of the taxes on it. Switching your mind from “property flipping” to the long term investing and you start to see some real opportunities. Let’s look at them in two categories, one as investing for money and the second as investing in the future.
Strictly looking at a profit stand point, if you find some nice land especially some that adjoins public and protected land like national forest, state parks or national timber lands you can be pretty sure that simply waiting for a few years will certainly see a return of investment if you want to then sell the land. Now take some steps to manage the land for wild life and you can really see a great return. Put in some feeders, clean out some of the brush and plant beneficial trees and plants in its place and perhaps construct a low impact shelter for camping and you start to really see the potential to not only sell the land at profit but to know that your buyer will want to preserve the land as well. If you can go as far as providing a year round water supply on land that previously had no water on it your return goes way up.
Now turning to the concept of investing in the future I get a lot more excited. To me owning the land is about also caring for it and doing the things I mentioned above. Such land is beautiful and a solid way to hold and insure your wealth. Yet if you really care for and manage the land you have a chance to leave behind to your family something that can continue to provide for wildlife and sportsmen for centuries. Three hundred years from now your great, great, great, great grandson could be teaching his son about wild life, nature and preserving beautiful things because of something you started. Perhaps while showing him an ancient digital photo of you and your family and telling the story about how you gave this gift to the family.
Isn’t that a bit more exciting then a CD, government bond or flipping a multi tenant property?
My view is people should work hard to build and preserve wealth. Yet as you do it is important to think beyond the return at the end of the year, we need to think about the legacy we create. Just something to think about as you build that empire.
So where do you find land like this? You have to hunt for it and venture out into the rural world yet there is at least one very good source to search for and find land like this. It is called United Country and my only warning is if you love country living or long for a place in the mountains you can spend a day just browsing on it. Anyway I would love to hear the thoughts of other nature lovers and sportsman about this type of “land investment” so please give me your feed back below.
Filed under Survivalism | Comments (2)Trust Deed Investing a Creative Investment Strategy
Right now the mortgage industry seems to be in melt down but real estate investing has a proven track record of making great returns even during recessions, that is when properly leveraged. In short trust deed investing is basically when private investors loan money that has real estate offered as collateral against the loan. Trust Deed Investing is nothing new; banks and private individuals have been loaning money against hard assets like land and other real estate for centuries.
In essence trust deed investing is like taking the position of being the bank in a mortgage vs being the slep paying interest for 30 years.
I recently asked to review a website for Diamond Bay Investments who specialize in trust deed investing. They are currently advertising returns of 12%. Investments like these are not with out risks and you should of course consult with your financial advisers before investing with any company or investment.
That said trust deed investing has a high potential rate of return and it is protected by a hard asset (land, property, buildings) so it is worth considering. It is not a place I would advise anyone to put all their money but it is one underutilized investment option that is a great part of a long term balanced investment portfolio.
